Meares lowers Aussie mark
Anna Meares has set an Australian record for the flying 200 metres in the weekend's Sprint Grand Prix in Cottbus, Germany.
Australia's Olympic Team sprint cyclists headed to the former East German city as part of their preparation for London.
Meares clocked 10.769 to shave 13 thousands of a second off the world record mark she rode at the World Championships in Melbourne in April.
The world record mark has since been lowered by German Miriam Welte who clocked 10.640 at altitude during the Colorado Springs Grand Prix in America two weeks ago.
In Cottbus Meares time topped the qualifying round and she then went onto defeat Germany's Krstina Vogel in the sprint final. Cuban Lisandra Guerra Rodriguez defeated Welte to claim third place.
Meares' Olympic team mate, Kaarle McCulloch placed fifth in the sprint.
In the men's sprint Shane Perkins came close to a personal best mark with the third fastest qualifying time of 9.982. He then raced his way into a final showdown with Robert Forstermann but the German proved too strong on home turf claiming the win in two straight heats.
Fellow Olympic team member Matthew Glaetzer, 19, qualified sixth fastest but won through to the bronze medal round where he was beaten by 28 year old experienced campaigner Kazunari Watanabe from Japan.
The Olympic team members didn't contest the keirin events but development rider, Mitch Bullen, 20, from New South Wales raced well to finish second behind Germany's Max Levy with Briton Matt Crampton third.
