Why join Cycling Queensland?

Upon membership you will be issued with a Cycling Australia (CA) licence. A full Racing licence enables you to enter all cycle races (in the appropriate category) run under the Cycling Queensland or Cycling Australia Auspices. You will also have 24/7 insurance which covers you while on the bike. Another benefit of becoming a member is the monthly newsletter "The Link" sent to all members and access to the CQ's professional coaching structure.

New members 

Cycling is a fun and exciting sport that can be enjoyed by everyone!  Getting started in cycling is easy, just follow these simple steps:

  1. From the Clubs page, choose a club close to you or that suits your needs;
  2. Check out the club website for the secretary contact detils and give them a call or send them an email to find out what they have to offer;
  3. To join, fill out a Cycling Australia Membership Form, pay the nominated affiliation fee;
  4. Once the Club has signed and stamped your affiliation form, you are good to race!
  5. Cycling Australia will issue you with your plastic license card within 3-4 weeks.

Until you receive your card license you must take the white paper receipt as proof of your membership to any races you compete in, this receipt is used until your plastic license card is issued by Cycling Australia.

This affiliation fee covers your membership for the calendar year and includes insurance cover and membership to your Club, Cycling Queensland and Cycling Australia.

You will find a list of all open racing events on our Calendar of Events.  Entries for these events are done via our Online Entry page and you will need your password to enter this secure site.  The username and password will be emailed directly to you by Cycling Austrlia once your membership has been processed.  Some Clubs also run local weekly racing, talk to your Club for more information on these events.

How to start training?

Here are some basic tips to help you towards enjoyable cycling.

  • Work on your fitness base. Begin with short rides a couple of times per week and gradually increase the distance and frequency over a number of months. Most of your training at this time should be comfortable and you should be able to carry out a conversation without running out of breath.
  • With fitness base behind you, start to pick up the intensity. Include some rides that you can talk, but only in short sentences.
  • A lot of cycle races finish in a sprint, so it's important to dedicate a portion of your training to speed and power. Once warmed up, try doing 10-30sec maximum efforts with a break of 2-3 mins. Start with 3-4efforts each session and build it up to around 10 over a number of weeks. This will help your speed.
  • As a beginner, the best form of training is racing at club level. It is here you can develop racing skills and tactics which can make the most of your fitness.
  • Recovery is an important part of training it can be in a number of forms including sleep, good nutrition, stretching and massage.
  • If you are looking for good places to train or a group to ride with contact your local bike shop or your Club for any bunches that leave around your area. 

What about a coach?

Accredited cycling coaches reside throughout the state. Any cyclist seeking coaching advise should contact their club to find out if there is an appointed club coach available to help. If your club does not have a coach, contact your state coaching coordinator and ask him/her to provide you with names of accredited coaches working around your area.

Parents and other interested individuals who may wish to extend their knowledge on the training principles associated with cycling can participate in Level One Coaching courses.  For further information refer to the Coaching section.

Cycling Equipment

Cycling is a sport where new equipment innovations, which supposedly give you the edge, take place at a rapid rate. It's important to remember that whilst new shiny and often expensive equipment is nice to own, the reality is you can't buy performance.

Ultimately, it is your fitness, strength and skills that give you good performances. Be sensible with your equipment purchase. Look for equipment that won't let you down when it matters most. Keep a look out for fellow club members selling second hand equipment.

There are rules regarding bike equipment for various age categories. Cycling clubs will be able to assist in this area, also the Technical Regulations.

Types of licenses available

CQ has a number of licensing products to suit everybody: 

  • Silver licence;
  • Club Only Licence - that allows you to enter club races only
  • Day permit - for the newcomer who is trying the sport out
  • 3 Ride Permit - for riders who wish to ride at only a few events.  (for new members - can only be taken out once)
  • Cycling Australia Gold Racing License

Because most of the Calendar races are run by clubs, they are an integral component of our racing structure and need to be supported as such. We therefore require all Association members to be a member of a club as well as CQ. Each club has their own identity and focus. Some clubs for instance have a strong junior bias, while others may focus on road or track. Also variable amongst clubs is the amount of club racing they organise and run. Their level of social activities is another aspect that may be important to you too.
