Robbie is Back!

Lachlan Paull, Friday, 13 April 2012
One of Queensland’s favourite sons, multiple Australian and Queensland cycling champion and 13 time stage winner of the Tour de France, GreenEdge's Robbie McEwen will return to his roots this weekend by competing in the States most prestigious tour event, the Queensland Road Teams Series (QRTS).

Fresh from his win in the 2012 OCBC Cycling Criterium in Singapore, McEwen will line up for Stage two of the series as a guest for QRTS team Erdinger Alkoholfrei – Downer EDi Mining.

McEwen, who is a member of Australia’s historic first pro cycling team, GreenEdge, will use the event as a tune up for his upcoming assault with GreenEdge in the Tour of Turkey later this month.

As a member of the Gold Coast CATS Cycling Club the courses throughout southern Queensland will hold no nerves for the 39 year old as Robbie has conquered not only the toughest courses in Australia but some of the most gruelling throughout Europe. McEwen, who is entering his final season on the pro tour, has seemingly done it all. European Tour wins, 13 stage wins in the Tour de France at the height of some of the greatest cycling careers including that of Lance Armstrong in addition to countless state and national championships.

Many would sit back and relax during the final year of a professional career, but not Robbie. Such is the determination of the Queenslander, he is always hungry for his next win and this should come as no surprise as he will set out to chase down some of the Country’s best young riders in this weekend’s event.

The QRTS will head to the Boonah region this weekend with an 80km road race and a treacherous hill climb time trial on Saturday afternoon. The round will finish up on Sunday with a second road race setting out from Roadvale on a 95km course.

McEwen’s presence in this year’s Teams Series is a great opportunity for local fans to come out and see arguably Australia’s finest current day road cyclist in action before a stellar career comes to a close.
