St Lucia Bikeway Construction to Commence in July 2010
Brisbane City Council is pleased to announce the start of construction on St Lucia Bikeway Stage 2B.
This project is part of Lord Mayor Campbell Newman's commitment to Council to provide $100 million in Bikeway infrastructure over four years. Part of the wider bicycle network, this $5.1 million bikeway will complete the St Lucia Bikeway and create a continuous bicycle link from Indooroopilly to the University of Queensland.
The St Lucia Bikeway Stage 2B project continues the link from Tarcoola Street to the University of Queensland. It involves the construction of a shared pathway that is approximately 900 metres long. The works include:
- a concrete pathway that is approximately 410 metres long and three metres wide.
- a cantilevered/suspended bridge that is approximately 430 metres long
- a composite boardwork that is approximately 60 metres long
- a Bicycle Awareness Zone between Tarcoola Street and Sir William MacGregor Drive
- kerb and channel, some kerbside parking, and resurfacing of The Esplanade
On completion, the bikeway will provide improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians, increased accessibility and connectivity to the existing bikeway network and local families and destinations. Work is expected to commence in July and take ten months to complete, weather permitting.
