McCarthy goes from strength to strength

Ben MacFie, Friday, 23 July 2010

Queensland cyclist Jay McCarthy is part of the Australian squad who are achieving some great results in lead up events to the World Junior Road Championships in August.

McCarthy began his build up to worlds by competing in the GP General Patton of Luxemburg on July 10 and 11 where he impressed by scoring 2nd in the overall tour standings.

Australian teammate Damien Howson continued the teams run by picking up 1st place in a support race in Pisa, Italy on July 18th, while McCarthy backed up at this race with a notable 5th placing.

McCarhty’s best performance in Europe to date would have to be the 1st stage of the 4 day tour: Giro Orobica, where he took out the yellow jersey by showing off his climbing ability in a hilltop finish.

The tour in Orobica will be the last preparation race before the Championships which will commence on the 6th of August.

"Last year I managed to get 7th in the Road Race but after another years training and experience I am ready to challenge for the top of the podium," McCarthy said.

Based on Jay's performances so far this year, and his continued success throughout the Australian squad’s tour of Europe, selectors have rewarded him by naming him as part of the Australian team travelling to Singapore for the Youth Olympics.
