Ipswich CC To Stage Inaugural Cyclocross Event

Scott Kirton, Race Promoter, Friday, 23 July 2010

Following the success of the Ipswich Open, the Ipswich Cycling Club is excited to announce their inaugural Open Cyclocross Event. It will be staged on Saturday, 28th August 2010 at Jim Finimore Park, One Mile, Ipswich. The guaranteed prize pool is $1000.

Cyclocross racing, or “CX”, “cyclo-X”, or just “ ‘cross”, is a rapidly growing form of cycling that originated in France and Belgium in the early 20th century. Traditionally a winter sport, it involves racing through fields, roads and mud on modified road bikes. Riders have to dismount and carry their bikes at times to negotiate obstacles. The speed that a skilled rider can remount and clip-in while running is a sight to behold.

Cyclocross races are similar to criteriums, and generally last 30-60 min plus 1-2 laps. CX bikes are similar to road bikes, having drop bars and no suspension. They have wider knobbed tyres and cantilever brakes for mud clearance. Mountain bikes, BMX bikes, road bikes and single-speeds are all welcome to enter this event. Fixed-gears and brakeless bikes are not allowed however due to safety restrictions.  The course for this event is 2.5 km long and includes grass, concrete paths, gravel paths, stairs, barriers and a steep unrideable hill.

Cycling Queensland has sanctioned this event, and kindly allowed MTBA and BMX licence-holders to enter at no extra cost. Entry is $12 online at www.qld.cycling.org.au, or download a manual entry form. Day permits ($33) and 3-ride permits ($44) will be available for an additional fee at the event for non CA, MTBA or BMX licence holders wishing to participate.

Now popular throughout Europe and North America, large noisy crowds of spectators with cowbells are common at CX races. Traditionally beer and “frites” (hot chips) are served at CX events and this tradition will continue along with a range of other food and berverages. A covered grandstand area gives excellent views of the course, with easy car parking, toilets and showers also available.

Ipswich CC are grateful for the support of event sponsors :
